How to convert PNG to AVIF

PNG and AVIF compared

PNG stores images without losing a single pixel and supports a full alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent. It works best for logos, icons, screenshots, line art and images that need transparency, and is a weaker choice for large photographs, where the file size grows quickly.

AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec. It commonly reaches the smallest file size of the mainstream web formats and keeps transparency and wide colour. It is the better fit for modern websites that want the smallest possible images, while it is less suitable for older browsers and desktop software that cannot open the format yet.

Choosing a quality level

AVIF is a lossy format, so the quality slider decides the trade-off between file size and detail. Around 80–90 is a sensible range for photographs: the difference is hard to see, while the file is far smaller than at 100. Flat graphics with sharp edges usually need a higher setting, because lossy compression tends to blur hard edges.

What to check after converting

  • Open the result at full size and look at edges, text and flat colour areas first — that is where compression artefacts appear.
  • Compare the file size against the original. If a AVIF file is larger than the PNG source, lower the quality slider or reconsider the format.
  • Check that the image dimensions are unchanged. Conversion never resizes an image; use the resizer tools for that.

Format support in browsers

Saving files relies on the image encoders built into your browser. PNG, JPG and WebP are available almost everywhere. AVIF encoding is only present in some recent browsers, and the tool will tell you clearly when the format you picked cannot be written on the device you are using, rather than producing a broken file.

Does converting PNG to AVIF reduce the image quality?
AVIF uses lossy compression, so some detail is discarded when the file is written. At a quality setting of 80 or above the difference is usually invisible at normal viewing size. Keep the original file if you plan to edit the image again later.
